THE WROAR RIDE - PRESS RELEASE

RELEASE DATE: June 13th, 2005

The WROAR Ride – Women Ride Out Against Rape

The first ever WROAR Ride rolled through Toronto on June 12th!

Hot weather and hot bikes; the first WROAR Ride was quite an exciting experience. Over 40 women riders and their motorcycles rolled out at noon, and we made quite an impressive sight as we rolled through the streets of Toronto.

Together we raised over $8,500.00!

The WROAR Ride Event ran from 10 am to 5pm at the Docks and included a large rolling display in the form of the Honda 'Come Ride With Us' Demo rides, as well as the McBride Cycle booth with women's motorcycle clothing. Beads for Charity, Safety Trip Plan, CHFI, The EMS White Knights and Leather Master were onsite in the morning.

The WROAR Riders departed at noon, returning to the event around 2pm. We enjoyed a very empowering experience riding together through the streets of Toronto, and we hope that the impressive sight of so many women riding together will help to bring attention to the issue of sexual violence. Our very popular 'WROAR' Logo T-shirts say 'Can you imagine a world without Violence? We do'. Our immediate objective is to raise funds for the TRCC/MWAR, but our larger vision is of a world free of violence where services like those offered by the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape are no longer needed.

The Elaine Dark Band played Rockin' Blues through the afternoon, and we enjoyed a fabulous line up of women comedians including Debra DiGiovanni, Kristeen von Hagen, Shelley Marshall, Ginny Allen, Dini Dimakos. Honda Canada's 'Come Ride With Us' Demo Rides were a very popular feature of the WROAR Event, both the women on the ride and the general motorcycling public enjoyed the opportunity to ride the 2005 lineup from Honda.

We're already working to plan the Second WROAR Ride, for next summer - Sunday June 11th, 2006.

The Toronto Rape Crisis Centre has a thirty-one year history of providing 24-hour confidential crisis counseling for survivors of sexual violence, as well as educational programs, and other services, supported by the grass roots fundraising efforts of women like the 'WROAR Riders'.
